Race Update

Bill and the team hit Kaltag checkpoint this morning at 5:45 am AST. Still at 11 dogs and still going at a steady pace of 7mph. Kaltag is the 597th mile of the race....65% of the way through. It's a bit discouraging that 597 miles is only 65% of the trail, but I guess that's better than only being halfway through. From here, it's an 85 mile trek to the coastline. Our dogs have little to no experience with the harsh coastline, hopefully they'll be able to manage it.
The frontrunners have about 125 miles to go to Nome. It's an extremely close race between Dallas Seavey, Aliy Zirkle, Aaron Burmeister, and John Baker. Right now, Seavey has a 45 minute lead, but that can change at any moment. I'm guessing that they'll come in sometime late tomorrow afternoon.
Keeping my fingers crossed that the push up the coast goes well!
